History! I missed the field credit for my archaeology degree because of some... real life stuff, so they told me I could TA instead. I should be able to graduate next year if things aren't too crazy by then.

Sure am! I've done some fieldwork in Arizona, but one day I'd love to see a hominid in person. I've been to a lot of different ancient monuments, but it's not the same...

A friend of mine is big into ruins. Maybe you know him, Jake English?

I do mechanics and programming. Robots, drones, AIs. That kind of thing.

Yeah, I talked to him before. He was really big on conservation, too.

Wow, that's awesome! I never really had the brain for math. I can do what I need to do in the field, but that's way different from programming something.

What was the first thing you ever made?

I took apart an old RC car and built a tentacled destroyer of souls for my little sister. She likes that kind of Lovecraftian horror.

[It is of course about his siblings; most things in Dirk's life are.]

I'm an only child, so I don't really know what that's like. Are you the oldest?

[Sorey loves his family dearly, but his cousins he sees once a year are the only 'siblings' he really has.]

Oldest in the form of twins, with my sister Roxy. It's nice, havin' siblings.

[It's a comfort, even when it sometimes breaks his heart.]

[If Sorey had siblings, maybe he wouldn't feel so awkward at times. He has Mikleo, at least, but Mikleo sort of transcends any label.]

Though I imagine that can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending.

[HA. HA HA. Ha ha ha. Sorey cannot know that he has hit across Dirk's greatest misery, the deep feeling of isolation and loneliness that once he was protected from but which has quickly come to constantly torment him.

Yeah, I think it's a good thing, too. Whenever I'm around my cousins, I can't really think of anything but being with them.

My best friend would be horrified if he had to deal with all my cousins fussing over him though. He gets really anxious around people.
